Working on memorizing my mannequin. Loomis and many others advocate memorizing and ideal or mannequin figure to aid in drawing from the imagination.

I did this before I went on vacation as an experiment. I haven’t had enough digital painting experience and until I can get a matrix-like download into my skull, it looks like I’m stuck with the good ole’ fashioned ‘practice until you get good’ method.

I’ve been pluggin away at it. The first blog was a joint effort, started in August of 2008. There were about 6 of us I think. All students from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Arts. Anyway, I started my own blog in June of 2010. I’m bringing as many of those old posts over here to put them all in one place. I do have many of the pictures but quite a few of those posts were made using my old cell phone camera and those, unfortunately, are gone forever. Take a look, even though it’s an incomplete history of my experience at school, I think there’s some cool stuff in there.

I have been blogging since 2008 or so, but for awhile now you couldn’t find it on the internet. Like many of my other pursuits *coughpaintingcough* I fumble around and make mistakes. So, it is not all that surprising that I managed to delete my blogger accounts while trying to do something else entirely. Recently, I found a backup of my old blog and I am putting some effort into reestablishing my blogging history, only this time it is right here on my own website. That’s not to say I won’t mess it up again…just that I have a better chance of recovering it when I do.
I hope you take some time to look through the old posts. It has taken quite a bit of effort to reattach pictures and I’m working through them slowly. Posts are just going to pop into the history, dated where they belong and you won’t see them unless you around every once in awhile.

Looking for something.
I don’t remember what I was looking for exactly while I working on these two paintings. Whatever it was..I didn’t find it. Sadly, neither of them exist anymore. I wish I had finished them. 
Sketching it out
I was fooling around with some different surfaces and working on different paint textures when I made’em. I always liked doing experiments like these.
Some don’t work out quite right though. For instance, the panel treatment was too absorbent on this one and as a result the paint crumbled and fell off in some areas. 
I sealed this one a bit better though.

What’s important to me…
Recently someone was mentioning to me some complex technical issues they were learning about from their painting instructor. Now, when it comes to painting, I have always had a pretty ravenous appetite for new information but, I could not have been less interested in the information he was learning. I was happy that he was happy… but, I wasn’t curious and I had only the foggiest of notions of what he was talking about. What I think is happening is…well, since I graduated I have begun to really zero in on what is important to me and why I like the painters that I do. For me, it is really far more about design than it is about rendering. In my own work I have begun to work hard at painting things simply and with the most basic shapes, while still trying to achieve a sense of reality.
